What would you do if you were called a Jamona?
"Papi what's a jamona? i asked as we left the market, our bellies full.
Its a women who has never married.
I thought that was a senorita
Its the same thing. but when someone say a women is jamona it means she's too old to get married. Its an insult.
How come?
Because it means no one wants her. Maybe she is too ugly to get married"
A conversation between Esmeralda and her father.

When I read this paragraph I was in shock. I couldn''t believe that they actually have a name for ugly women and are okay and aren't afraid to call them that name. This isn't really natural to call an old woman this and if my aunt were to be in their position they all would be called that. And this is very hurtful for i bet everybody who is that. It connects to me-because my aunt has never been married and i dont think she is ugly or anything. but she just hasn't been married.

What do you think you would do if someone started speaking to you and you understood them. Would you reply?
“Te preguntó el Mr. Barone, you know, lo que querías hacer when you grow up?” I asked.
“Sí, pero, I didn't know. ¿Y tú?”
A conversation between Esmeralda and Yolanda, a new 9th grader.

This quote was half english and half spainsh because they are both immigrants. and its really itersesting to me because they both understand each other. I think it is easier for her to speak spanish yet she wants to learn english and this way she can do both with another immigrant who understands.
This connects to me because i would talk to my brother and parents because they know little spanish and i like to practice with them and speaking in spanish.
